Zinc finger domains are thought to be involved in DNA-binding, and exist as different types, depending on the positions of the cysteine residues. Proteins containing zinc finger domains of the C-x8-C-x5-C-x3-H type include zinc finger proteins from eukaryotes involved in cell cycle or growth phase-related regulation, e.g. human TIS11B (butyrate response factor 1), a probable regulatory protein involved in regulating the response to growth factors. It has been shown that different CCCH zinc finger proteins interact with the 3' untranslated region of various mRNA. This type of zinc finger is very often present in two copies.
Many of the proteins are C3HC4 RING finger proteins.
PEI encodes an Arabidopsis protein containing a Cys3His zinc finger domain associated with a number of animal and fungal transcription factors. In situ hybridization results showed that PEI1 is expressed throughout the embryo from globular to late cotyledon stage.
