The NAC (NAM, ATAF1,2, CUC2) gene family is one of the largest families of plant specific transcription factors . It’s members have been implicated in regulating diverse processes including flower development and reproduction, defence, abiotic stress responses and responses to hormones . The first NAC gene to be described was no apical meristem (NAM) from petunia . Plants harbouring this mutation lack a shoot apical meristem, as do plants with mutations in both CUP-SHAPED COTYLEDON 2 (CUC2) and CUC1. NAC1 plays a role in lateral root formation and auxin signaling and TIP functions in a resistance response pathway and interacts with the turnip crinkle virus capsid protein inducing a hypersensitive response . The NAC family members are defined by the presence of the NAC domain, a conserved DNA-binding domain that appears to have no known close structural homologues . The NAC domain is found in the N-terminal region of NAC proteins and X-ray crystallography show that it consists of a twisted anitparallel -sheet that packs against an N-terminal -helix on one side and a short helix on the other side . As well as DNA binding, the NAC domain also appears to be involved in dimerisation and NAC proteins have been shown to homo- and heterodimerise .
